The president of Dangote Group, Aliko Dangote has been named the richest man in Africa for the 12th year running, according to the Bloomberg Billionaires Index.
His wealth is currently estimated to be $15.6 billion. Dangote Industries is a closely-held conglomerate behind some of sub-Saharan Africa’s most significant enterprises, including the largest cement producer on the continent, Dangote Cement, and a sugar, fertiliser and packaged food manufacturer.
The conglomerate has recently commissioned Africa’s largest petroleum refinery plant as well. Bloomberg confirmed that Dangote was the only Nigerian on its list of the top 500 billionaires.
Dangote was also recognised as the top charitable man in the world by London digital periodical Richtopia after endowing his foundation, the Aliko Dangote Foundation, with $1.25 billion.
Dangote started his foundation in 1981 with the aim of investing in opportunities to improve health and well-being, provide quality education and enhance economic opportunities.
The Aliko Dangote Foundation is now the largest private foundation in sub-Saharan Africa and the largest endowment from a single African donor. The foundation’s primary focus is health and nutrition, supported by initiatives in education, empowerment and humanitarian assistance.
The only other Africans to feature in Bloomberg’s latest top 500 billionaires were Johann Rupert and his family, worth $13.3 billion of South Africa, and Nicky Oppenheimer, Nassef Sawiris, Natie Kirsh and Naguib Sawiris, all of whom are worth between $5.93 and $9 billion.
The Bloomberg Billionaires Index is a daily ranking of the world’s richest people.
To calculate net worth, Bloomberg strivers to provide the most transparent calculations available, with each profile including a detailed breakdown of how an individual’s fortune is calculated.
The index is dynamic and based on changes in markets, economy and Bloomberg reporting.
Net worth figures are updated every business day after trading has closed in New York, and valuations are converted to US dollars.
The richest individuals in the world are currently Elon Musk and Bernard Arnault, both with over $190 billion in their estates, followed by Jeff Bezos and Bill Gates.
