Bayer Leverkusen have signed English defender Jarell Quansah from Liverpool in a deal worth up to €40 million, including €10 million in add-ons, according to British and German media reports.
The 22-year-old centre-back becomes Leverkusen’s most expensive signing, surpassing the €32 million paid for Kerem Demirbay in 2019.
The contract reportedly includes a €60 million buy-back clause, which Liverpool can activate from the summer of 2027.
“We are very happy to be able to sign Jarell Quansah, one of the most promising English central defenders,” said Simon Rolfes, Leverkusen’s managing director of sport. “He made a very impressive contribution to a Liverpool defence full of world-class players. Jarell will bring extra dynamism, tempo and strength to our backline.”
Quansah, who joined Liverpool’s academy at age five, made his senior debut in 2023 and has since made 58 appearances.
He won the League Cup twice (2022 and 2024) and was part of the Reds’ Premier League-winning squad last season.
Despite his potential, Quansah often played behind first-choice centre-backs Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konaté.
He now arrives in Germany to fill the void left by former Leverkusen captain Jonathan Tah, who recently departed the club.
Speaking after the move, Quansah said: “The ambitious targets here were clearly explained to me during negotiations. It’s a great role and challenge to be part of Leverkusen’s rebuild.”
Leverkusen, who made Bundesliga history by going unbeaten in 2024, endured a disappointing 2024/25 campaign, finishing 13 points behind champions Bayern Munich.
Quansah’s arrival is part of a broader reshuffle at the club, which also saw key players Florian Wirtz and Jeremie Frimpong move to Liverpool earlier this summer.
