The ongoing nationwide workers’ strike has disrupted the coroner’s inquest into the mysterious death of popular rapper Mohbad (Ilerioluwa Aloba). Born on January 3, 1996, Mohbad passed away under unclear circumstances on September 12, 2023, leading to protests and prompting the Lagos State government to order a coroner’s inquest.
The strike, initiated by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress, has now affected the proceedings of the inquest, which was adjourned to November 15 to determine the cause of the 27-year-old singer’s death.
Security officials at the court refused entry to magistrates and judiciary staff on Wednesday, citing full compliance with the ongoing strike. Litigants and court customers expressed their concerns over the strike’s impact on judicial processes.
Mohbad’s death, following injuries sustained at a concert in Ikorodu, Lagos, on September 10, led to preliminary findings naming an auxiliary nurse, Feyisayo Ogedemgbe, as the prime suspect. Ogedemgbe allegedly injected Mohbad thrice in his home on September 12, resulting in vomiting and other adverse reactions.
Commissioner of Police in Lagos State, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, revealed that 26 individuals, including Mohbad’s family members, friends, and associates, had been interviewed. Owohunwa detailed the events, stating that Mohbad and his childhood friend, Ibrahim Owodunni (Primeboy), engaged in a violent altercation after a concert on September 10. The injuries sustained during this altercation were later attributed to the singer’s death.
The police also detained “Naira Marley” and Samson Balogun (Sam Larry) over their roles in Mohbad’s death, as they were reported to have bullied the rapper. Abdul-Aziz Fashola (Naira Marley) was held based on accusations made against him.
The strike-induced disruption to the coroner’s inquest raises concerns about the timely resolution of the case and adds another layer of complexity to the ongoing investigation into Mohbad’s untimely demise.
