Nigerian music sensation Davido recently graced the set of The Bride alongside Real Madrid midfielder Aurelian Thouameni, model Cindy Bruna, and François-Henry Bennahmias, offering candid insights into his journey to global stardom.
Reflecting on his early days signing with Sony Music in 2016, Davido shared the challenges of transitioning from a superstar in Africa to an emerging artist in the international music scene. Despite his prior achievements, including selling out a stadium in Mali, Davido found himself needing to prove his worth to those unfamiliar with his accomplishments.
“When we come to sign record deals overseas, they don’t know we are superstars back home,” Davido explained, recounting the skepticism he encountered upon signing his first international deal. Despite his disappointment, Davido persevered, collaborating with renowned producers to create his 2016 EP ‘Son of Mercy’.
However, despite featuring popular tracks like ‘Skelewu’, ‘How Long’ featuring Tinashe, and ‘Coolest Kid in Africa’ featuring South African rapper Nasty C, the EP fell short of Davido’s expectations. He viewed it as a personal failure, striving for greater success both locally and internationally.
Undeterred, Davido returned to Lagos and collaborated with local producers to create new music, including the smash hit ‘IF’ produced and co-written by Tekno. This track would propel Davido to international acclaim, surpassing the expectations Sony Music had for the ‘Son of Mercy’ EP.
During the 1 hour 22 minutes long interview, Davido also touched on the rise of Nigerian music, acknowledging the sacrifices made by the first generation of stars and emphasizing the importance of paving the way for future generations.
