Cardi B Opens Up About Mental Health Struggles, Fear of Fame Pressure

In a revealing conversation as part of Complex’s 360 with Speedy series, Grammy-award winning artist Cardi B provided a rare glimpse into the challenges faced by even the most celebrated figures in the music industry. Her candid revelations shed light on the toll that fame can exact on mental health, serving as a stark reminder for fans and critics alike.

Known for her vibrant personality and unapologetic presence, Cardi B peeled back the layers to expose a more vulnerable side during the interview. Despite her monumental success and massive fan base, she confessed to feeling profoundly affected by the constant stream of criticism and negative feedback on social media platforms, which at times deterred her from both her craft and personal life.

“I just feel like I lost myself with everything,” Cardi B admitted, articulating the overwhelming pressure she faced from both the public and the music industry itself. The expectation to continually churn out hits and maintain a specific image had left the 31-year-old artist feeling trapped in a state of apprehension. “A lot of music commenters and everything and a lot of people just be like, ‘She’s afraid to drop an album, she’s afraid to drop music,’” she recalled, highlighting the narrative that had followed her throughout 2023.

The past year saw Cardi B take a hiatus from music, with the exception of her collaboration with Megan Thee Stallion on “Bongos.” This stark contrast to her earlier prolific output, including the highly acclaimed album Invasion of Privacy in 2018, underscored the extent to which fear of public scrutiny had paralyzed her artistic expression. “Like last year, I barely dropped music,” she lamented, expressing her struggle to overcome the fear that had gripped her. “It’s just like I was just afraid to do everything.”

Cardi B’s honest disclosure sheds light on the often overlooked aspect of celebrity life – the intense scrutiny and pressure that can overshadow the art itself. Her experience serves as a poignant reminder of the real human emotions behind the glitz and glamour, sparking important conversations about mental health and the perils of fame.
