United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres has warned that the world is “brimming with conflict, impunity, inequality and unpredictability” as global cooperation weakens at a critical moment.

Guterres issued the warning on Thursday while addressing the UN General Assembly on his priorities for 2026, his final year in office. He said the international system is under severe strain from wars, deepening divisions, climate breakdown and declining respect for international law.

The UN chief recalled assuming office in 2017 during a period of optimism for multilateralism following the adoption of the Paris Climate Agreement and the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals.

Outlining his focus for 2026, Guterres identified three key priorities: upholding the UN Charter, promoting peace among nations and with nature, and fostering unity amid growing global divisions.

He cautioned that widening geopolitical rifts and cuts to development and humanitarian funding are placing multilateral institutions under intense pressure.

“When we need cooperation most, we are least inclined to invest in it,” he said, adding that despite doubts about international cooperation, the UN would not abandon its mission.

The Chief of Defence Staff (CDS), Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, has reaffirmed the commitment of the Armed Forces of Nigeria to confront terrorism, criminality and all threats to the nation’s peace and democratic stability.

Oluyede gave the assurance on Wednesday while speaking at the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day regimental dinner, noting that while the military remains resolute, safeguarding national heritage requires a collective effort.

He stressed the need for a whole-of-society approach to security, anchored on strong partnerships with local communities and effective collaboration with sister security agencies.

According to him, such cooperation is central to his military strategic philosophy for the Armed Forces.

The CDS said despite daunting challenges, Nigerian troops have continued to prevail, winning public trust and strengthening civil-military relations across the country.

“As we remember our fallen heroes, we are reminded that the foundation of our freedom was laid by their sacrifices and sustained by those who continue to defend the nation against great odds,” Oluyede said, paying tribute to officers and men who paid the supreme price in service to Nigeria.

He urged personnel to remain guided by honour, professionalism and selfless devotion, adding that the spirit of comradeship should continue to bind the Armed Forces as one family.

Also speaking, the Minister of Defence, retired Gen. Christopher Musa, described the Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day as more than a ceremonial event, calling it a reflection of Nigeria’s military heritage.

Musa said the occasion provides an opportunity to celebrate the courage, professionalism and resilience of serving personnel, while honouring fallen heroes whose sacrifices underpin the nation’s peace and security.

Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Dr. Hyacinth Alia, on Thursday led top government officials, traditional rulers and security chiefs in honouring Nigeria’s fallen and living heroes as part of activities marking the 2026 Armed Forces Celebration and Remembrance Day (AFCRD).

The ceremony, held at the Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida (IBB), Square, Makurdi, featured the laying of wreaths at the tomb of the unknown soldier.

Governor Alia led the exercise, followed by his deputy, Barr. Sam Ode; Speaker of the Benue State House of Assembly, Alfred Emberga; the Tor Tiv, Prof. James Ortese Iorzua Ayatse; the Och’Idoma, Dr. John Elaigwu Odogbo; and representatives of the Nigerian Legion and other uniformed services.

The governor later signed the anniversary register and inspected the Guard of Honour.

Speaking to journalists, Alia commended officers and men of the Armed Forces for their sacrifices in protecting lives and property, stressing the need to uphold Nigeria’s unity in honour of those who paid the supreme price in defence of the nation’s peace and territorial integrity. He also called for sustained support for families of fallen heroes.

Highlights of the event included interdenominational prayers by Christian and Muslim clerics, a 21-gun salute and the release of pigeons to symbolise peace.

The celebration was preceded by Jumma’at prayers at the Central Mosque and a Christian service at Deeper Life Bible Church, High Level, Makurdi. The event also featured free medical outreach and refreshments for attendees.
