The Vice Chancellor of the Federal University of Technology and Environmental Sciences (FUTES), Iyin Ekiti, Prof. Gbenga Aribisala, has announced that the institution will commence academic activities with four faculties in October.

The faculties are Engineering, Computer Science, Natural and Applied Sciences, and Environmental Sciences.

Speaking at a reception organised in his honour by the 1979 set of Ifaki Grammar School Old Students Association, Aribisala said the university was working towards a fully residential system to promote discipline and academic excellence.

“We are set to lay a solid foundation by running a fully residential institution that will produce disciplined graduates and 21st-century leaders capable of solving Nigeria’s most pressing challenges, particularly unemployment,” he said.

The VC added that FUTES would prioritise character and learning, with a vision of becoming Africa’s leading university.

He stressed that recruitment adverts would soon be published, warning applicants against patronising fraudulent sites or agents.

According to him, the National Universities Commission (NUC), has conducted a resource verification exercise and expressed satisfaction with the facilities.

He said the university was awaiting formal communication from NUC and JAMB before admitting its pioneer students in October 2025.

Aribisala appealed for public support in the area of infrastructure, especially hostels, noting that government alone could not meet the funding needs.

“If we have individuals who want to donate buildings, we will name them after them. Those willing to build hostels or give scholarships are also welcome,” he said.

Coordinator of the IGSOSA 1979 Set, Mr. Olajide Familoye, described Aribisala’s appointment as a collective success and expressed confidence in his ability to place FUTES on the world map.

The university’s Registrar, Mr. Oluwole Dada, also commended IGSOSA for celebrating excellence and assured that the institution was ready to deliver quality education.

It will be recalled that President Bola Tinubu, in March, appointed Senator Binta Garba as Pro-Chancellor and Chairperson of the Governing Council of the university.

Nigerian musician Timi Dakolo has announced plans to assist parents struggling to pay their children’s school fees as the 2025/2026 academic session resumes.

In a post on his official X handle on Wednesday, Dakolo acknowledged the heavy financial pressure school resumption places on families and pledged to ease the burden for some parents.

He urged parents and guardians to send copies of their children’s school bills to the Instagram account @TheOyindaOlu, noting that payments would be made directly to schools. Receipts, he added, would be shared with parents as proof of payment.

“I know how difficult this period can be for families,” Dakolo wrote, stressing his desire to reduce parents’ stress during one of the most demanding times of the year. His gesture quickly drew praise online, with many followers hailing the initiative.

The announcement comes amid rising education costs across Nigeria, with families lamenting steep increases in tuition, levies, books, and uniforms. For many households, school reopening has become a season of financial strain despite the excitement of children returning to classrooms.

Dakolo, known for music that highlights family values and social themes, has often spoken on issues affecting education and welfare. His latest move reflects a broader trend of public figures offering direct support to Nigerians during periods of economic hardship.

Tinubu Approves 600-Bed Hostels for Abuja Law School

President Bola Tinubu has approved the construction of new hostel facilities to accommodate 600 students at the Abuja campus of the Nigerian Law School.

The approval was disclosed on Tuesday in a statement issued by Lere Olayinka, Senior Special Assistant on Public Communications and Social Media to the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

According to the statement, Tinubu directed FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, to immediately commence work on the projects.

The presidency explained that the initiative is aimed at addressing accommodation challenges faced by students of the institution.

The plan includes the construction of two separate hostel blocks, each with a capacity of 300 students; one for male residents and the other for female residents.

In December 2024, Wike had inaugurated the design, construction, and furnishing of an annex office for the Body of Benchers, stressing that providing infrastructure for the judiciary should not be mistaken for executive interference.

Around the same period, he also launched the design and construction of 10 four-bedroom bungalows for staff of the Law School, donated operational vehicles, including three coaster buses and four Hilux vans and pledged to include two hostel buildings in the 2025 FCT budget.

Olayinka noted that the hostel projects will be executed under emergency provisions, covering both the 300-capacity male hostel and the 300-capacity female hostel.

In addition to the hostels, Tinubu also approved the construction of a new road linking the Body of Benchers Secretariat in Jabi District with Nile University.

According to the FCT Minister’s spokesperson, the road is expected to ease gridlock on the route leading to the headquarters of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
