The Federal Capital Territory Emergency Management Department (FEMD), has entered into a partnership with the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria (COREN), to curb disasters linked to failed engineering systems in Abuja.
Acting Director-General of FEMD, Abdulrahman Mohammed, disclosed this during a visit to the COREN Registrar, Prof. Okorie Uche, in Abuja.
Mohammed attributed the rising spate of petrol tanker accidents to overloading and the absence of weighbridges on highways.
He warned that major disasters such as plane crashes, refinery collapses, and dam failures often stem from engineering failures.
“COREN must police the system to make our work easier. We must collaborate in terms of rules and regulations so we can sanitise the system,” he said, urging COREN to involve FEMD in its Engineering Regulations Monitoring (ERM), for better emergency preparedness.
In his response, Prof. Uche assured that COREN would provide technical support to FEMD in safeguarding public health and protecting the environment.
