NNPP Chair: Kwankwaso Can’t Decide 2027 Alliances

The National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), Agbo Major, says former presidential candidate Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso has no authority to determine the party’s alliances ahead of the 2027 elections.

In a statement on Friday in Lagos, Major faulted Kwankwaso’s remarks at a Kwankwasiyya Movement meeting in Abuja, where the former Kano governor declared that the NNPP was open to alliances in 2027.

The NNPP has been engulfed in a leadership tussle since after the 2023 elections. While Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya group claim control of the party, the Major-led executives insist their memorandum of understanding with him expired after the polls, adding that he was expelled for alleged anti-party activities.

Major dismissed the Abuja meeting as “null and void,” stressing that its resolutions could not override the party’s structure or court judgments affirming its leadership changes.

“Kwankwaso continues to use the NNPP name to negotiate and make statements capable of causing unrest.

“His recent comment accusing the federal government of neglecting the North is a clear example,” Major said.

He disclosed that the party is awaiting the Independent National Electoral Commission’s (INEC), response to its request to update records with details of the new leadership from a court-ordered convention.

Warning Nigerians and political groups, Major said: “Anyone entering into an alliance with Kwankwaso and his Kwankwasiyya group in the name of NNPP does so at their own risk. Our party remains open to alliances, but not on the basis of personal vendettas.”

He added that the NNPP will provide equal opportunities for aspirants through mandatory primaries, stressing that the party would not allow a repeat of what it described as a “betrayal” in 2023.

Tinubu Defends Electoral Act 2026 Amendment

President Bola Tinubu on Wednesday defended signing the Electoral Act 2026 (Amendment), saying credible elections rely more on proper management and human oversight than real-time electronic transmission of results.

Speaking at the Presidential Villa in Abuja, Tinubu emphasized that elections are ultimately conducted by people, not computers, and stressed that final results are announced by electoral officials, not machines.

He raised concerns about Nigeria’s technical readiness for mandatory real-time result transmission, citing broadband limitations and the risk of glitches or interference. “Voting remains fundamentally manual from ballot issuance to counting. Electronic transmission reflects only the arithmetic record,” he said.

The amendment, which sparked debate in the National Assembly, allows electronic transmission after Form EC8A is signed and stamped. Where technology fails, manually signed forms will serve as the official record.

Tinubu expressed confidence that the law will support free, fair, and credible elections while safeguarding democracy.

LP Crisis Deepens as Nenadi Usman, Abure Trade Arrest Threats

The Labour Party’s leadership crisis worsened on Monday as the Nenadi Usman led National Working Committee called for the arrest and prosecution of former National Chairman, Julius Abure, over an alleged invasion of the party’s national secretariat in Abuja.

Speaking at a press conference, Usman accused Abure and his supporters of storming the secretariat, threatening officials and carting away sensitive items, including laptops, financial documents and registration records.

She also alleged that party billboards bearing her image were destroyed.

“We demand the immediate arrest and prosecution of Julius Abure and others for criminal invasion, contempt of court, impersonation and threats to constitutional democracy,” Usman said.

She claimed the incident lasted over 30 minutes and that videos of the operation were posted on social media.

Usman said the party had petitioned the Inspector General of Police, the Department of State Services and other security agencies to intervene.

However, Abure’s faction dismissed the allegations as false. In a statement signed by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Obiora Ifoh, the faction described Usman’s claims as “fallacious and laughable,” insisting there was no handover of the secretariat.

The faction alleged that individuals scaled the fence on February 10 to remove the party’s billboard and replace it with Usman’s, but maintained that the leadership dispute remains before the appellate courts.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC), has condemned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, over his reported declaration of “war” against anti-Tinubu candidates ahead of the February 21, 2026 elections.

In a statement, ADC National Publicity Secretary Bolaji Abdullahi warned that such rhetoric could inflame political tensions and undermine democratic stability.

The party insisted that the outcome of the FCT polls would be determined by voters, not President Bola Ahmed Tinubu or any government official.

The statement described Wike’s threat as “irresponsible and dangerous” in Nigeria’s fragile political climate. ADC emphasized that sovereignty rests with the people, not with any minister or president.

The party also pledged to resist any attempt to intimidate voters or subvert the electoral process, insisting that Nigerians would exercise their franchise freely and lawfully.
