Tottenham Hotspur edged Manchester United 1-0 on Wednesday night to lift their third Europa League title, thanks to Brennan Johnson’s decisive first-half strike at the San Mames Stadium.
The hard-fought victory not only ended Spurs’ 16-year trophy drought but also secured their return to the UEFA Champions League. For United, the defeat marks a historic low, as they miss out on European football for the first time since the 2014-2015 season.
The North London side, who last tasted silverware in 2008 when they won the League Cup, made history again with this latest triumph, adding to their previous UEFA Cup victories in 1972 and 1984.
Johnson struck in the 42nd minute after pouncing on a low cross from Pape Sarr.
The ball deflected off Luke Shaw’s shoulder and brushed Johnson’s boot before trickling past Andre Onana into the net.
Despite United’s spirited response in the second half, Spurs stood firm. Micky van de Ven’s spectacular goal-line clearance from Rasmus Hojlund’s header preserved the lead, after goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario misjudged a deep set-piece.
Tottenham bossed the tempo and remained disciplined in defence, frustrating a United side that had already lost three times to them this season.
Late efforts by Luke Shaw and substitutes Alejandro Garnacho and Joshua Zirkzee couldn’t break down a resolute Spurs backline, as captain Son Heung-min came off the bench to help see out the win.
The result compounds a woeful season for Manchester United, while Tottenham cap a forgettable domestic campaign with continental glory.
