The Federal Government has unveiled a comprehensive plan to combat the proliferation of counterfeit fire extinguishers by training 6,000 Nigerians as certified Fire Extinguisher Servicing Vendors (FESVs).
This initiative aims to enhance fire safety compliance, generate employment, and ensure the widespread use of functional, approved fire extinguishers nationwide.
Spearheaded by the National Fire Extinguisher Control (NFEC), under the guidance of the Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, the program addresses the alarming presence of substandard fire extinguishers in the market.
Participants will receive specialized training in fire extinguisher maintenance, positioning them to service equipment booked by enforcement teams from the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), and the Federal Fire Service (FFS), as well as safety-conscious citizens.
This effort not only aims to curb the circulation of fake fire extinguishers but also to track and address equipment failures at critical moments.
The program is expected to create sustainable employment opportunities and boost government internally generated revenue (IGR), by closing economic loopholes associated with counterfeit products.
High-risk sectors, such as petroleum transportation, will particularly benefit, as the initiative mandates the use of properly maintained extinguishers to ensure compliance and safety.
To make the training more accessible, the Federal Government is calling on fintech companies and private organizations to subsidize costs for underprivileged youth.
Registration portals for the program are slated to open soon, inviting interested participants to enroll.
This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to enhancing public safety, creating job opportunities, and eradicating the threat posed by counterfeit fire safety equipment in Nigeria.
