Nigeria’s tax landscape witnessed unprecedented transformation in 2024 under the leadership of Dr. Zacch Adedeji, Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS).

His groundbreaking reforms reshaped tax administration, enhancing efficiency and fostering trust between citizens and the government.

Guided by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, Dr. Adedeji embraced innovation to modernize Nigeria’s tax system.

Key among his achievements was the overhaul of the TaxProMax platform, automating over 80% of previously manual processes.

This modernization simplified tax collection, improved transparency, and made compliance easier, particularly for small businesses.

Dr. Adedeji also expanded Nigeria’s tax base, reducing overdependence on oil revenue. By integrating small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) into the tax system with incentives and support, he diversified revenue streams while fostering economic growth.

These efforts culminated in FIRS exceeding its N19.4 trillion revenue target for 2024, a significant leap from N12.3 trillion in 2023.

Promoting fairness was central to Dr. Adedeji’s reforms. His policies ensured a balanced tax burden, encouraging wealthier individuals and corporations to pay their fair share while protecting the poor.

This equitable approach cultivated a culture of compliance and fairness among taxpayers.

Transparency and accountability were also prioritized. Partnering with the Independent Corrupt Practices Commission (ICPC), Dr. Adedeji established the Anti-Corruption and Transparency Unit (ACTU) within FIRS to combat corruption and uphold ethical standards.

His guiding principle, “We tax the fruit, not the seed,” emphasized a fair system that nurtures prosperity without overburdening the disadvantaged.

Additionally, the National Single Window Project (NSWP), streamlined trade processes by integrating tax and trade systems into a single platform, reducing bureaucracy and boosting Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

Dr. Adedeji’s international influence as President of the Commonwealth Association of Tax Administrators (CATA), further enhanced Nigeria’s stature, fostering global collaboration and knowledge exchange.

In 2024, Dr. Adedeji’s visionary leadership not only strengthened Nigeria’s fiscal health but also positioned the country for sustained economic growth.

His reforms established a tax system that is fair, efficient, and globally competitive—an enduring legacy of transformative progress.

The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, has assured residents that President Bola Tinubu’s administration will continue to drive Abuja’s transformation into a world-class city before the end of his tenure.

Wike gave the assurance on Thursday during the flag-off of the construction of Arterial Road N20 (Solomon Lar Way), linking Road N5 (Obafemi Awolowo Way) to the Airport Expressway.

He said the project was in line with Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, stressing that the administration would not neglect any sector of development.

“All of us can attest that under the Renewed Hope Agenda of Mr. President, the narrative has changed. By the grace of God, before the end of this first tenure, Abuja will compete with most cities in the world,” Wike said.

The minister explained that funding delays had stalled the road project for six months after its award by the Federal Executive Council (FEC) but assured that his leadership would only commence projects with guaranteed financing.

He urged the contractor, Gilmore Engineering, to prioritize employing local youths, noting that the ongoing infrastructure drive in the FCT had already created multiple job opportunities.

“With 16 days of consecutive project flag-offs, you can imagine the number of people engaged. Sixteen days means 16 companies being involved in one way or the other,” he said.

Wike also appealed to residents to cooperate with contractors to ensure smooth operations and timely delivery, warning against project variations that prolong timelines.

He added that the completion of Arterial Road N20 would enhance connectivity, boost economic activities, raise property values, and improve access to key areas of the capital.

“No sector will be left untouched. We have also moved into the health sector to ensure every area of Abuja’s development receives the attention it deserves,” the minister added.
