A raging fire devastated the sole market in Trademore Estate, Lugbe, Abuja, in the early hours of Monday, leaving residents reeling from the loss.

The blaze, which ignited around 3:30 a.m. shortly after power was restored by the Abuja Electricity Distribution Company, spread rapidly and overwhelmed the market before emergency responders could arrive.

Eyewitnesses suspect an electrical fault as the possible cause of the fire. Joe, a resident who was among the first to notice the flames, described the situation as chaotic.

“I was alerted around 4 a.m., and by then, the fire had already engulfed much of the market. We suspect it was triggered by an electrical fault,” he said.

Emergency response was initially delayed, but the fire service from Dunamis Church arrived at 5 a.m., followed shortly by teams from the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission and Sauka Station.

It took nearly two hours to bring the inferno under control, preventing it from spreading to nearby areas.

The full extent of the damage remains unknown, with traders and residents now grappling with significant losses and an uncertain future.

Authorities are yet to release an official statement on the incident.

This disaster adds to Trademore Estate’s history of misfortunes.

In June, severe flooding submerged homes, with reports of individuals swept away by floodwaters.

The estate has faced repeated flooding incidents, including a similar tragedy in 2023 that left over 100 houses submerged.

Residents now plead for urgent intervention to address the estate’s growing vulnerabilities.

However, Richard Inoyo, a civil society leader, dismissed the endorsement, arguing that the caucus does not represent the people’s will.

Meanwhile, speculation is growing that Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong may challenge Otu in 2027, with his expanding free transport scheme seen as a strategic move.
