The Federal Government has allocated N112 billion to ensure the safety of learning environments across Nigeria.
The funding, part of the National Plan for Financing Safe Schools, will be used over the next three years to enhance school security and promote inclusive education for all students.
Imaan Suleiman-Ibrahim, the Minister for Women Affairs, made the announcement on Wednesday in a statement marking Universal Children’s Day, themed “Advancing Children’s Rights for a Sustainable Future.”
She emphasized the government’s progress in advancing children’s rights and improving their welfare through various initiatives.
“The N112 billion allocation will support the maintenance of safe school environments across the country for the next three years.
“This initiative is part of our broader effort to ensure schools remain secure and accessible for every child in Nigeria,” the minister said.
Suleiman-Ibrahim also highlighted the government’s commitment to children’s rights, noting that all 36 states have now adopted the Child Rights Act.
She further praised the impact of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act, which strengthens legal protections for children against violence, exploitation, and abuse.
She also emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s dedication to creating an environment where every child has access to education, healthcare, and a life free from harm.
The government’s progress includes: Adoption of the Child Rights Act (CRA 2003) by all 36 states, ensuring children’s rights are protected under Nigeria’s Constitution.
Enforcement of the Violence Against Persons Prohibition (VAPP) Act of 2015 to safeguard children from abuse and exploitation. Advancing the Maputo Protocol through legislative reforms and a comprehensive child protection framework.
Despite these strides, the minister acknowledged ongoing challenges, including child labor, trafficking, harmful cultural practices, and barriers to inclusive education.
She called on all stakeholders to collaborate in addressing these issues to ensure a safer and more equitable future for Nigeria’s children.
