Delta State Approves Prof Azinge as 14th Asagba of Asaba

Delta State has officially appointed Professor Epiphany Azinge, SAN, as the 14th Asagba of Asaba, marking a new era for the Asaba Kingdom.

The announcement was made by the State Commissioner for Information, Dr. Ifeanyi Osuoza, following an Executive Council meeting led by Governor Sheriff Oborevwori.

Azinge’s appointment, a widely anticipated decision, follows his selection by the Asagba-in-Council from among ten qualified contenders.

His nomination in August was based on unanimous support from his village and the traditional Ebo council, solidifying his standing as the most qualified candidate.

A constitutional law expert, Prof. Azinge has held numerous prestigious roles, including his recent tenure as president of the Commonwealth Secretariat Arbitral Tribunal in London.

His ascension to the throne brings to Asaba, a leader of both academic renown and deep-rooted community ties, succeeding the late HRM Prof. Chike Edozien, who reigned until his passing at age 100.

As the new Asagba, Prof. Azinge’s leadership is expected to usher in an era of continued cultural preservation, unity, and growth for the Asaba Kingdom. His formal coronation is anticipated soon, marking a historic chapter for Asaba and its people.

Archbishop Crotty made this commendation on Tuesday during a courtesy visit to the governor’s office in Enugu. The visit coincided with the centenary celebration of Bigard Memorial Seminary, a landmark institution in the formation of Catholic priests.

The Apostolic Nuncio highlighted the global impact of Bigard Seminary, which has produced thousands of archbishops, bishops, and priests who propagate Catholic values both in Nigeria and worldwide. “This achievement underscores the great role Nigeria plays in the universal Church. Many of these priests are from Enugu, serving locally and internationally,” Archbishop Crotty said.

Conveying Pope Francis’ gratitude to Governor Mbah for his support of the Catholic Church, Archbishop Crotty also reflected on the historic bond of faith uniting Nigeria and the Vatican.

In response, Governor Mbah acknowledged the Catholic Church’s influence on his life and leadership, emphasizing how its values shape his work ethics and decision-making.

He further lauded the Church’s role in molding young people, which he credited for Enugu’s reputation for excellence in character and values.

As part of the visit, Governor Mbah took Archbishop Crotty and his entourage on a tour of some of the state’s innovative landmarks, including a digital museum, digital artworks, and the Experiential Centre. The governor also highlighted Enugu’s significant contributions to Nigeria’s economic, social, and administrative history.
