National Commissioner of the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC), Dr. Vincent Olatunji has reported that more than 40 million Nigerians spend an average of six hours each day on social media.

He shared this insight during a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signing with social media influencer Enioluwa Adeoluwa in Abuja, aimed at promoting data protection awareness.

Dr. Olatunji highlighted the risks of sharing personal information online and stressed the need for increased data privacy education, particularly since the Nigeria Data Protection Act (NDPA) came into effect in 2022.

Despite ongoing efforts, he noted that awareness remains limited, especially in rural areas.

To address this gap, the NDPC signed a six-month partnership with Adeoluwa to help inform Nigerians about their data protection rights.

With roughly 65% of Nigerian youth actively using social media for personal and business purposes, Dr. Olatunji pointed out that these platforms offer an effective means for reaching the public.

“We have over 65 million Nigerians on social media, and it’s essential to use these platforms to spread critical information about data protection,” he explained.

Adeoluwa, enthusiastic about the partnership, emphasized that his motivation was national progress rather than financial rewards. He expressed hope that the campaign would help Nigerians make safer choices online.

The impact of this partnership will be reviewed after six months to evaluate its success in raising awareness of data protection.
