In response to escalating security concerns, Senator Ned Nwoko of Delta North has proposed a bill allowing Nigerian citizens to carry firearms for self-defense. Announcing this on Channels Television today, October 31, Senator Nwoko argued that arming responsible citizens could deter criminals, particularly in regions prone to kidnappings and bandit attacks.

He highlighted the tragic recent death of his senior legislative aide in a kidnapping incident, suggesting that such attacks might be prevented if citizens were allowed to defend themselves. Figures like former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom and House Majority Leader Alhassan Ado-Doguwa have previously advocated for self-defense rights in the face of Nigeria’s security crisis.

Nwoko’s proposal introduces strict firearm licensing requirements, including mandatory training, local leadership validation, and psychological evaluations by certified health professionals, targeting only “qualified individuals” in high-risk areas. However, the proposal has sparked debate, with critics concerned it could exacerbate violence rather than curb it.
