In celebration of the 2024 International Day of the Girl-Child, the Rotary Club of Abuja, Jabi Lakeside, has distributed over 500 packs of reusable sanitary pads to girls in the Kuchingoro community, Abuja. The initiative, held in partnership with the Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) Slay Dot Com Aid, also included training the girls on producing reusable pads to promote self-sufficiency.
Speaking at the outreach on Friday, the President of the Rotary Club, Amobi Ogum, highlighted the need to address menstrual health challenges that prevent girls from attending school, stressing the long-term negative economic impact.
“I pledged the continuous support for the girl-child with projects and programs that will enable them to become confident members of their societies,” Ogum said.
As part of the empowerment program, the club also donated five sewing machines to selected recipients. Ogum urged the beneficiaries to use the machines productively for personal and community benefit, cautioning them against selling the equipment.
The District Governor of District 9127, Mike Ukachi Nwanoshiri, attended the event as the special guest and commended the Rotary Club for their commitment to empowering girls.
“Girl-child empowerment is a key focus of my administration, and I promise to continue supporting girl-child education,” Nwanoshiri stated.
The traditional ruler of Kuchingoro, Chief Ibrahim Wambai, expressed gratitude to the Rotary Club for its continued support of the community. Wambai acknowledged the club’s various contributions, including interventions in the local school, healthcare center, and several empowerment initiatives over the years.
He also assured the community’s readiness to make good use of the resources and opportunities provided by the Rotary Club. “We will always remain peaceful and utilize the empowerments brought to us for the benefit of the community,” Wambai said.
The outreach reflects Rotary’s dedication to advancing education, health, and empowerment for vulnerable groups, reinforcing their impact at the grassroots level.
