How Wike’s Newly-Launched Free Abuja Metro Services Provides Lifeline for Residents in Economic Hardship

Published

on

As part of efforts to alleviate the economic challenges brought on by the removal of fuel subsidies and the rising cost of Premium Motor Spirit (PMS), the President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led administration has launched a free ride initiative on the Abuja Rail Mass Transit. The initiative, which falls under the broader Renewed Hope Agenda, is aimed at cushioning the impact of the economic reforms on Nigerians, especially those affected by the high cost of fuel.

Correspondents from Abuja City Journal confirmed the introduction of the free metro services in interviews with new and regular passengers who rely on the metro for their daily commutes. The free metro rides, spearheaded by the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, were officially flagged off on May 30, 2024, with the project originally inaugurated as a flagship initiative on May 29, 2023. The anniversary of the project’s inauguration on May 29, 2024, was commemorated as one of the highlights of President Tinubu’s first year in office.

According to a senior official from the rail management team, who requested anonymity, the free rides were initially planned to last for just two months. However, due to the ongoing economic challenges, President Tinubu extended the free services until December 2024 to help mitigate the financial burden on commuters. “The president, in his magnanimity, extended the free metro rides to December 2024 as part of his commitment to alleviate the current economic hardship,” the official noted.

The official further explained that the Abuja Rail Mass Transit system was not a new initiative. “The project had been commissioned before, and trial operations ran for 18 months from 2017 to 2019, but operations came to a halt due to the onset of COVID-19,” he said. During the pandemic, the rail facility suffered extensive vandalism and destruction, forcing it to shut down completely.

“The facility was heavily vandalized during the COVID-19 lockdown, which necessitated a complete overhaul and rehabilitation. When the Tinubu administration came into office, they assessed the damage and promptly initiated the process of reviving the system,” he added.

According to the official, President Tinubu expressed a personal interest in seeing the FCT Minister’s Metro Train in action. This spurred Minister Wike to pour significant time, resources, and effort into resuscitating the once-moribund facility. His determination has brought the project back to life, serving as a testament to the government’s commitment to modernizing Nigeria’s public transport system.

The Abuja Metro System is a critical component of the city’s overall transportation plan, which is laid out in the Abuja Transportation Master Plan. The plan is divided into six lots:

  • Lot 1A: This section is fully operational and currently serving passengers.
  • Lot 1B: Expected to be developed soon.
  • Lot 2: Runs from Gwagwa to Nyanya, covering a significant portion of the city.
  • Lot 4: Extends to Bwari.
  • Lot 5: Connects the Airport to Kuje and Gwagwalada.
  • Lot 6: Links Kubwa to Suleja, providing an important transport link for suburban communities.

Despite the project’s successes, challenges remain. The director noted that vandalism, though curbed to a large extent, still poses a threat. “Criminality is a global issue. And, although the current administration has taken stringent measures to protect the rail system, we still receive occasional reports of vandalism,” he admitted.

However, the director expressed optimism about the future, noting that Nigerians are gradually adapting to the culture of using trains instead of relying solely on fossil fuel-powered vehicles. “The fact that the train is running is a milestone in itself. Nigerians are slowly embracing the culture of boarding trains, which helps reduce the reliance on fossil fuels,” he added.

The free metro service comes at a critical time for Nigeria as the nation transitions from the use of fossil fuels to cleaner alternatives such as Compressed Natural Gas (CNG). This move aligns with the government’s goal of reducing carbon emissions and promoting eco-friendly energy sources. CNG is cheaper, cleaner, and more sustainable, offering Nigeria an opportunity to reduce its carbon footprint while ensuring that transportation remains affordable for the masses.

For many commuters, the Abuja Rail Mass Transit has been a lifeline during this period of economic uncertainty. The free rides have provided much-needed relief, especially for those struggling with the rising cost of living. Passengers interviewed by Abuja City Journal expressed their gratitude for the service, noting that it has significantly eased the burden of daily commuting.

“The free metro service has been a lifesaver for me,” said one regular passenger Mr Joshua. “With the high cost of fuel and transportation, I don’t know how I would have managed without it,” remarked Mr Jacob. ‘’ This is actually my first experience but I hope its going to be a sustainable initiative,’’ Paul asserted.

As the free metro service continues to operate, it stands as a symbol of the Tinubu administration’s commitment to providing practical solutions to the economic challenges faced by ordinary Nigerians. With the extension of the service to December 2024, more people will have access to affordable, reliable, and eco-friendly public transportation, further enhancing the capital city’s infrastructure and easing the financial burden on its residents.

The Abuja Rail Mass Transit project is poised to play a pivotal role in shaping the future of public transportation in Nigeria, and with the continued support of the government, it is set to become a cornerstone of the nation’s sustainable development efforts.

Atoyebi Adewumi has emerged winner of the fourth edition of the National Essay Competition, beating more than 2,000 contestants in an intellectual contest aimed at promoting academic excellence, critical thinking and creative writing among young Nigerians.

The competition, which focused on the relevance of taxation to national development, challenged participants to examine the role of tax revenue in financing public services, stimulating economic growth and strengthening the relationship between government and citizens.

The initiative provided a platform for young Nigerians to demonstrate their writing skills, articulate informed perspectives on national issues and contribute ideas towards building a more responsible and progressive society.

Speaking after being declared winner, an elated Adewumi expressed gratitude to the convener, Foluso Sylvanus Ojo, and the organising team for providing young Nigerians with an opportunity to showcase their intellectual abilities.

“I am so glad, very, very glad, to have this privilege of emerging as the winner. I am grateful to the convener and the entire team, as well as everyone who supported this vision,” Adewumi said.

In his remarks, Ojo expressed concern over the tendency to criticise the attitudes and lifestyles of younger generations without providing adequate opportunities to nurture their talents and channel their energies towards productive pursuits.

He called on the government, corporate organisations and nongovernmental organisations to invest more in educational initiatives that promote intellectual excellence, creativity and responsible citizenship.

According to him, sustained investment in academic competitions and youth development programmes would encourage discipline, innovation and a stronger commitment to national development.

Drawing a comparison with the substantial cash prizes awarded in some reality television competitions in Nigeria, Ojo argued that students and intellectually gifted young Nigerians deserved greater recognition, financial support and encouragement.

“I believe the government should support initiatives like this because individuals need supportive hands, especially from the government. When they receive such support, they become more confident and motivated to continue their good work,” he said.

Ojo maintained that society could not continue to complain about the attitudes and lifestyles of young people without deliberately investing in programmes that encourage positive values and productive engagement.

The fourth edition of the competition also underscored the importance of tax awareness among young Nigerians, highlighting how effective taxation, transparency and accountable governance could contribute to improved infrastructure, education, healthcare and other essential public services.

Beyond celebrating the winner, the competition reinforced the need to identify, encourage and empower emerging intellectual talents capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.

Caritas Nigeria Urges Ecological Conversion, Climate Action

Published

Caritas Nigeria has called on Nigerians to embrace what Pope Francis describes as “ecological conversion,” urging citizens, institutions and governments to move beyond environmental rhetoric and take concrete action against climate change and environmental degradation.

The call was made during the commemoration of World Environment Day 2026 at the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria (CSN) Training Hall, Abuja, under the theme: “Inspired by Nature. For Climate. For Our Future.”

Delivering an address on behalf of the Catholic Secretariat of Nigeria, the Deputy Secretary, Rev. Fr. Augustine Okochi, described care for the environment as a moral, spiritual and ethical responsibility rooted in Christian faith.

“Our concern for the environment is not a passing trend. It is part of our moral duty, our Christian witness, and our responsibility to future generations,” he said.

Fr. Okochi noted that climate change is already affecting communities through flooding, land degradation, water pollution, rising temperatures and declining livelihoods, with the poor, women, children and displaced persons bearing the greatest burden.

He commended Caritas Nigeria’s efforts in environmental awareness, tree planting, climate-smart agriculture and support for vulnerable communities, while urging families, schools, parishes and institutions to cultivate a culture of environmental stewardship.

Speaking at the event, Caritas Nigeria’s Environmental Focus President, Dr. Pascal Onu, stressed the importance of educating young people on environmental protection through debate and quiz competitions.

“We believe it is important to catch them young. When we imbibe the right environmental culture in our children, it goes a long way in protecting the environment,” he said.

Dr. Onu identified inadequate infrastructure, poor waste management systems and limited funding as major obstacles to environmental sustainability despite increasing public awareness of climate issues.

Also speaking, Director of the Department of Climate Change at the Federal Ministry of Environment, Dr. Iniobong Abiola-Awe, reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to climate action through initiatives such as the National Adaptation Plan, Nationally Determined Contributions (NDCs), the Just Transition Action Plan and the National Clean Cooking Policy.

She emphasized the role of young people in advancing climate solutions through programmes such as the Eco-Schools Initiative and the Youth Climate Innovation Hub.

In a goodwill message, the Abuja Environmental Protection Board (AEPB), represented by Chief Environmental Health Officer Omenta Rachael Chinenye, urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from nature in addressing environmental challenges and commended the active participation of students in climate debates.

Students at the event said the programme deepened their understanding of environmental protection, forest conservation and sustainable living, pledging to promote environmental responsibility in their schools and communities.

The event brought together religious leaders, government officials, environmental experts, students and development partners who renewed their commitment to building a cleaner, greener and more climate-resilient Nigeria.
