Big Brother Naija star Phyna has sparked a heated debate with her recent comments on Chidinma Adetshina’s participation in the Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 pageant. On August 14, 2024, Phyna took to X (formerly Twitter) to express her concerns about Chidinma’s decision to compete, despite supporting her overall. Phyna’s apprehensions center on the potential impact Chidinma’s entry might have on other Nigerian contestants who have been preparing extensively for the prestigious competition.

Phyna’s remarks were rooted in her belief that Chidinma should consider stepping back from pageantry this year to allow other contestants a fair opportunity. “While I fully support Chidinma and her journey, I think it’s important to consider the efforts and dreams of other Nigerian queens who have been working towards this moment,” Phyna shared. Her suggestion, however, was met with mixed reactions from X users, with some accusing her of xenophobia.

In response to the backlash, Phyna clarified that her comments were not intended to be divisive. “I’m not against Chidinma in any way,” she explained. “I just want to ensure that the competition remains fair and that all contestants have an equal shot at success.” Her clarification did little to quell the ongoing debate, as discussions about fairness, representation, and the challenges of pageantry continued to trend on social media.

Chidinma Adetshina’s journey to Miss Universe Nigeria 2024 has been anything but smooth. She initially gained attention after being announced as a contestant in the Miss South Africa pageant. However, her participation was short-lived due to allegations of fraud and identity theft involving her mother. The controversy led to widespread criticism from South Africans, ultimately forcing Chidinma to withdraw from the competition.

Despite the turmoil, Chidinma’s resilience caught the eye of the Silverbird Group, organizers of the Miss Universe Nigeria pageant, who extended an invitation for her to compete in Nigeria. Chidinma accepted the offer, seeing it as an opportunity to represent her country on a global stage.

Phyna’s comments have brought attention to the complexities of pageantry, where contestants often face scrutiny not only for their performance but also for their personal lives. The debate has highlighted the need for fairness in competitions that celebrate beauty, intelligence, and cultural representation.
