The Nigeria Communication Satellite Limited (NigComSat) has entered into a strategic partnership with Hotspot Network Limited to extend internet connectivity to underserved rural communities across Nigeria. The collaboration aims to leverage satellite technology to deliver reliable and affordable internet services where access has traditionally been limited.

Mrs. Jane Egerton-Idehen, CEO of NigComSat, announced the partnership over the weekend, highlighting its significance in addressing the digital divide in Nigeria. “Under this partnership, NigComSat and Hotspot Network will combine their strengths to deploy connectivity solutions to areas lacking internet access,” she stated.

NigComSat will provide satellite coverage for transmission at Hotspot Network sites as the company initiates its expansion efforts. Mrs. Egerton-Idehen emphasized that improving internet access is crucial, especially in rural areas where connectivity remains a challenge.

Citing a 2023 report by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), Mrs. Idehen noted that only 40% of Nigerians currently have access to broadband internet. She underscored the government’s ambitious targets to increase broadband penetration to 70% by the end of 2025 and to cover 80% of the population by the end of 2027.

“Our collaboration with Hotspot Network supports these goals by enhancing rural network expansion. By 2027, we aim to reduce the gap of unconnected Nigerians in rural areas from 61% to less than 20%,” she added.

Hotspot Network’s CEO, Morenikeji Aniye, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, emphasizing their commitment to connecting millions of unconnected individuals. “By pooling our expertise and resources with NigComSat, we can deploy innovative solutions that bring reliable and affordable internet access to rural communities,” Aniye remarked.

Mrs. Idehen also highlighted the government’s broader initiatives to enhance connectivity across Nigeria, including Project 774 led by the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy. She mentioned NigComSat’s engagement with ICT commissioners in various states to address local connectivity needs.

The rural connectivity project, supported by the Universal Service Provision Fund (USPF), will utilize the NigComSat-1R Ka-Band platform to reach numerous rural communities. The initiative’s first phase is set to roll out within the next six months, aiming to transform digital access and empower rural Nigerians in the digital economy.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
