The French Embassy in Nigeria, through its Cooperation and Cultural Department, has initiated a plastic waste management project valued at €753,000 to be executed across 13 Nigerian universities. This announcement was made by Dr. Sebastien Bede, Deputy Head of Cooperation and Cultural Service, and Attache for Science and Academic Cooperation at the French Embassy in Abuja, during a news conference on Friday in Abuja.

Dr. Bede explained that the project, under the French Embassy Fund (FEF), aims to foster innovative and adaptive ideas for reducing plastic waste and promoting sustainable practices on university campuses. “Plastic waste is a pressing global issue, and through this project, we aim to reduce the plastic footprint on Nigerian campuses,” Bede stated. He also emphasized the project’s goal of inspiring a new generation of environmental stewards who can advocate for a plastic-free world within their communities.

Dr. Bede mentioned the possibility of organizing a study tour involving Nigerian universities, French universities, business schools, and engineering schools to discuss further cooperation. “Whether it is for plastic recycling or any other areas of cooperation, we are willing to open the cooperation to more universities in Nigeria,” he added.

A key aspect of this initiative is sustainability. Bede noted, “We have co-designed a business model for these microplants, and the total amount for this project is €753,000.”

A steering committee has been established to oversee the project, comprising representatives from the participating universities, the National Universities Commission, the Tertiary Education Trust Fund, the Petroleum Technology Development Fund, and the Ministry of Environment.

The universities benefiting from this project include Alex Ekwueme Federal University, Bayero University Kano, Nile University of Nigeria, Covenant University, Babcock University, and the University of Jos. The initiative also extends to Obafemi Awolowo University, the University of Ibadan, the University of Lagos, Yaba College of Technology, the University of Calabar, the University of Nigeria Nsukka, and the University of Delta.

Over the next 18 months, the project aims to deliver two microplants co-designed by and for two universities, support research initiatives for innovative solutions in sustainable development, and facilitate an exchange program between Nigerian and French researchers. Dr. Bede outlined that the project’s components include circular economy practices, enhancing the qualitative value chain, promoting gender inclusivity, and fostering entrepreneurship to support the research projects. He highlighted the importance of the exchange program as a critical part of the project’s implementation.

This ambitious project underscores the French Embassy’s commitment to addressing environmental issues and fostering sustainable development in Nigeria’s higher education institutions.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
