Nigerian students have secured major victories at the Huawei ICT Competition 2023–2024 Global Final held in Shenzhen, China. The competition, which is one of the largest offline ICT events since its inception, attracted over 170,000 students from more than 2,000 universities and colleges across 80+ countries and regions.
Huawei aims to provide a platform for students to enhance their ICT knowledge, practical skills, and innovation capabilities through this competition. This year’s global final featured nearly 160 teams, comprising 470 competitors from 49 countries and regions, who advanced through national and regional contests.
On Sunday, May 26, 2024, four Nigerian teams achieved remarkable success by winning two grand awards and two first prizes. The University of Ibadan team, consisting of Rufus Olusoji Adisa, Tolani Adekunle Adisa, Chibueze Emmanuel Ibekwe, and Lawrence Chukwuemeka, won the grand prize in the Computing Track category.
Another team from the University of Ibadan, including Lukman Oyeniyi Abdulyekeen, Sodiq Babawale, and Temiloluwa Oloye, secured the top honour in the Cloud Track division.
In the Network Track division, two teams from the Federal University of Technology, Minna, won first-place awards. Team 1 members were Knimi Bakna Musa, Kaosar Salaudeen Ahmad, Taiye Ayantola, and Oluwagbemiga Victor Ogundele. Team 2 comprised Justus Ilegieuno, Yusuf Olanrewaju Toye, and Jamiu Damilare Dahunsi.
Zhou Hong, President of Huawei’s Institute of Strategic Research, emphasized the importance of making digital technologies accessible to all, ensuring that everyone can benefit from digitalization.
Other notable winners included teams from China and Morocco, who received the Green Development Award. The Women in Tech Award was given to teams from Kenya, Malaysia, Morocco, and Uganda, while teams from the Philippines and China took home the TECH4ALL Digital Inclusion Award.
In addition to celebrating these achievements, Huawei continues to expand its presence in various technology sectors. Recently, the company launched a new software brand, Qiankun, for intelligent driving, marking its latest effort to become a key player in the electric vehicle market.
