Renowned comedian Ayodeji Richard Makun, popularly known as AY, recently discussed the reasons behind his newfound apprehension in delivering certain jokes. In a recent interview with media personality Toke Makinwa, AY reflected on a previous incident where he publicly apologized to singer Davido for a joke that garnered intense backlash.
The comedian, known for his witty humor, had issued an apology in October after making jest of Davido’s personal life, suggesting the singer’s purported impregnations were a result of a discrepancy in anatomical proportions.
AY, however, attributed the controversy to bloggers’ sensationalism, claiming that his jokes were taken out of context. He expressed how hurtful reactions, fueled by the sensationalized reporting, had affected him as a human being, prompting him to exercise caution in selecting the topics of his jokes.
In his own words, AY stated, “I’m human. When that joke came out, the timing wasn’t right because sensationalism now became a part of it. There was a running issue between David and Amaju Pinnick going on online that same day. So this joke was said on the show earlier before all of that drama came up.”
AY emphasized the tendency of bloggers to seize on headlines without investigating or providing context, leading to misinterpretations and negative reactions from the public. He shared the impact such incidents have had on him emotionally, stating, “As a human, that will get to me.”
Cognizant of the potential consequences of his words, AY expressed newfound caution, mentioning his reluctance to revisit certain jokes to avoid further controversy. Looking ahead to his upcoming UK tour, he affirmed his commitment to exercising discretion in his comedic endeavors.
