Threads Software Threatens Court Action Against Meta Over Trademark Dispute

Threads Software Limited is prepared to seek a court injunction if Meta does not comply with its demands regarding a trademark dispute. The software was initially trademarked in 2012 by JPY Ltd and has been actively promoted globally since 2014. Threads Software Ltd, a spin-off from JPY Ltd, conducted its first commercial sale in the USA and has since licensed its software to over 1,000 organizations worldwide, with current sales growing at a remarkable rate of 200 percent per year.

Threads Software is pursuing legal action against Meta for the use of its brand name. The thread app, launched by Meta in 2019, was designed as a competitor to Snapchat rather than a Twitter clone. Threads Software is gearing up to take on Meta, potentially leading to a compensation payment. Asserting ownership of the trademark name, the British software company has issued a 30-day notice to Meta to comply.

In an official press release, John Yardley, the Managing Director of Threads Software, acknowledged the challenge of taking on one of the world’s largest tech companies. He emphasized that this battle represents a classic David and Goliath scenario with Meta. While Meta may believe it can use any name it chooses, it does not grant them the right to utilize Threads Software’s brand name.

Yardley also revealed that lawyers acting on behalf of Meta made four offers from April 2023 to purchase the Threads app domain, all of which were declined by Threads Software, firmly asserting that the domain was not for sale. In July, Meta Threads was officially announced, and Threads Software subsequently found its Facebook account shut down.

Despite the legal dispute, Zuckerberg remains confident that the Thread user base will continue to grow as more features are added to the app. Thread users have varying reactions to the allegations, with some expressing doubts about the impact on Meta, even if they lose the case in the UK.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
