BUA Cement CEO Reveals Plans to Cut Cement Prices after Meeting Tinubu

Abdul Samad Rabiu, Chairman of BUA Cement Plc., has disclosed plans to significantly cut the price of cement in a significant move aimed at aiding the Federal Government’s attempts to stabilise the pricing of key commodities. Rabiu told journalists during a meeting with President Bola Tinubu at the State House in Abuja that his company is committed to making cement more accessible to Nigerians.

Rabiu claimed that BUA Cement plans to reduce the present cement pricing from N5,000 to N5,500 per bag to a more affordable N3,000 to N3,500 per bag. This substantial price cut is scheduled to begin with the December completion of two new manufacturing lines, each with a 3 million tonne capacity.

During his discussion with President Tinubu, Rabiu expressed his appreciation for the President’s hospitality and used the occasion to discuss the business of BUA Cement. He went into greater detail about the company’s objectives for growth, emphasising the upcoming start-up of the two new production lines.

With the addition of these two facilities, BUA Cement’s overall production capacity will rise to an impressive 17 million metric tonnes per year. Rabiu emphasised that the company’s ambitious goal of considerably lowering cement prices would be accomplished thanks to this increased capacity.

Along with energy sources like gas, which are widely available in Nigeria, he also highlighted the composition of the raw materials required in cement manufacture, with limestone and gypsum being the primary components. This wealth of local resources puts BUA Cement in a good position to support the government’s initiative to lower the cost of basic necessities for the Nigerian people.

The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), has approved the participation of licensed Bureau De Change (BDC), operators in the Nigerian Foreign Exchange Market (NFEM), allowing each BDC to purchase up to $150,000 weekly.

The approval was contained in a circular dated February 10, 2026, signed by the Director of the Trade and Exchange Department, Dr. Musa Nakorji, and addressed to authorised dealer banks and the general public.

The CBN said the move is aimed at improving foreign exchange liquidity in the retail segment of the market and meeting the legitimate needs of end users, amid a widening gap between the official and parallel market exchange rates.

Under the new arrangement, licensed BDCs can access foreign exchange from the NFEM through any authorised dealer bank of their choice at the prevailing exchange rate.

The apex bank directed banks to carry out full Know-Your-Customer (KYC), and due diligence checks on BDC clients before selling foreign exchange to them.

It also imposed reporting and transparency requirements, mandating BDCs to submit returns electronically to the CBN.

In addition, the bank prohibited third-party transactions and limited cash settlement to a maximum of 25 per cent of each transaction.
