CHAIRMAN HIT BACK AT LP, SAYS “YOUR DEMAND FOR MY DISMISSAL, PROSECUTION MISPLACED”

Published

on

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission ( INEC) Professor Mahmood Yakubu has reacted to the demand for his removal as Chairman of the Commission and prosecution by relevant authorities over the alleged electoral heist.

Rotimi Oyekanmi, Chief Press Secretary, CPS, to the INEC Chairman, in a response dismissed the call for his removal and prosecution as misplaced.

Speaking futher on the observations and recommendations of the EU and other observers, Professor Yakubu declared that “it is not within the remit of any election observer whatsoever to indict INEC. They are to observe and make recommendations if they have any, but never to indict.

“In the same manner, it is also not within the Labour Party’s jurisdiction to demand the dismissal and prosecution of the INEC Chairman over the outcome of an election in which the party fielded candidates. “

The INEC Chairman noted that the same electoral process which the LP has adjudged as shoddy has earned it ” one State Governor, eight Senators, 35 House of Representatives members and 38 members of the State Houses of Assembly. “

Professor Yakubu further warned the opposition party to restrict “itself to activities permitted under the rules and regulations governing the conduct of political parties.”

According to him::” The latest and familiar call by the Labour Party for the dismissal and prosecution of INEC Chairman, Prof. Mahmood Yakubu is misplaced. The reasons adduced by the party for making the demand are not only illogical but also ridiculous.

“To be sure, election observers, both local and international, are accredited by INEC to observe elections under specific rules and regulations. Under these rules, they are required to submit their respective reports to the Commission. Such reports may or may not include their recommendations.

“Therefore, it is not within the remit of any election observer whatsoever to indict INEC. They are to observe and make recommendations if they have any, but never to indict.

“In the same manner, it is also not within the Labour Party’s jurisdiction to demand the dismissal and prosecution of the INEC Chairman over the outcome of an election in which the party fielded candidates.

“Interestingly, arising from the outcome of the same 2023 General Election, the Labour Party has now produced one State Governor, eight Senators, 35 House of Representatives members, and 38 State Houses of Assembly members.

“It is surprising and strange that a political party that is in court to challenge the outcome of the 2023 presidential election would still go about openly advocating the issues before the court at press conferences, which it knows is sub judice.

“The Labour Party is one of the 18 political parties registered and being regulated by INEC in Nigeria. The party will do well by restricting itself to activities permitted under the rules and regulations governing the conduct of political parties.”

Earlier, the Director – General Labour Party and Obi- Datti Campaign Organisation, Akin Oshuntokun, made the call at a news conference in Abuja on Thursday.

Oshuntokun said the LP before the report of the European Union and other local and international observers whose report, it claimed, indicted INEC of shoddy preparations and wilful connivance with the ruling party to shortchange the electorate in its conduct of the last general elections.

He berated the INEC Chairman of a lack of transparency in the management of public funds appropriated by the National Assembly for the Commission.

Oshuntokun said: “In conclusion, we commend the International Community and Civil Society, for their continued support, in growing and consolidating our democracy.

“It is now only logical, bolstered by the final Observer Group reports, that the International Community take immediate and appropriate punitive action against Prof Mahmud Yakubu, Barrister Festus Okoye, and other top administrative and field staff of INEC, directly complicit in the desecration of these elections.

“We also demand unequivocally the immediate dismissal from office and prosecution of Prof Mahmud Yakubu and the commencement of the forensic financial investigation into the expenditure of budgeted disbursements and Donors’ funds received by INEC, not least of which is the N300 billion appropriated from the National purse, as well as other funds and materials, received from International Donor Agencies. “

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN), has described the recent attack on a church gathering in Eda Oniyo, Ekiti State, where a pastor was killed and several worshippers abducted, as an assault on the Church, human dignity, and the sanctity of life.

In a statement issued on Tuesday and signed by the President of CAN, His Eminence, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, CAN expressed deep shock over the incident, noting that the victims were attacked while peacefully gathered for an open-air crusade.

The association strongly condemned the violence, stressing that it was not only an attack on a place of worship but also a “brutal assault on shared humanity.”

CAN mourned with the family of the slain pastor and expressed solidarity with the victims and the Christian community in Ekiti State. It also called for the immediate and safe release of those abducted, urging security agencies to act without delay.

The association further noted that the Ekiti incident reflects a disturbing pattern of insecurity, referencing similar attacks in parts of Kogi State where residents, including clergy and their families, were abducted. It warned that the repeated incidents point to a deepening security crisis in the country.

CAN stressed that the protection of lives and property remains the primary responsibility of government, calling for swift, decisive, and transparent action to apprehend the perpetrators and rescue the abducted victims unharmed.

It also urged authorities to strengthen security presence in vulnerable communities and improve intelligence gathering to prevent further attacks.

The body condemned what it described as the growing normalization of violence against worshippers, warning that such acts reflect a dangerous disregard for life, faith, and national values.

It called on Nigerians and relevant authorities to speak out firmly against insecurity and ensure that places of worship are not turned into targets for criminal attacks.

CAN concluded by praying for comfort for the bereaved families, the safe return of the abducted worshippers, and lasting peace and security in the country.

Catholic Television of Nigeria (CTV), has set its sights on becoming a major player in Nigeria’s mainstream media space as it prepares to mark its 15th anniversary and one year of broadcast on GOtv Channel 115.

At a press briefing in Abuja on Monday, the Chairperson of the National Planning Committee, Barr. Dr. Princess Frank-Chukwuani, projected a bold future for the faith-based station, expressing confidence that CTV would soon be visible at key national platforms, including the State House and National Assembly.

“I see CTV in the near future covering national issues and interviewing top government officials. The station will be everywhere,” she said.
The station, founded in 2010 by Emeritus Archbishop of Abuja, John Cardinal Onaiyekan, has grown into a prominent Catholic broadcasting station, promoting faith, family values and national development.

The Director of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja and Executive Director, CTV, Very Rev. Fr. Patrick Alumuku, who was represented by the National Planning Committee Chairperson said CTV’s migration to GOtv Channel 115 on March 13, 2025, has significantly boosted its reach, with viewership rising by over 300 per cent to about eight million viewers across Africa.

He noted that beyond religious programming, CTV engages in balanced reporting, interfaith dialogue and civic coverage aimed at fostering unity.

On his part, the Deputy Director (Admin), Rev. Fr. Victor Ogunyemi, said the station’s content addresses pressing societal concerns such as insecurity, moral decline and family instability.

Speaking at the briefing, the Assistant Director of Communications, Catholic Archdiocese of Abuja, Rev. Fr. Kenneth Agwu, described the milestone as a testament to resilience, citing the high cost of electronic media and the sacrifices of staff and supporters in sustaining operations.
