The future of Jose Peseiro as the head coach of the Super Eagles will remain uncertain until after the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), scheduled to take place in Cote D’Ivoire from January 13 to February 11, 2024. This revelation was made by Nigeria’s Minister of Sports Development, Senator John Enoh, during a media briefing on Tuesday, November 28, as part of his 100 days in office activities.
Addressing concerns about the underperformance of the Super Eagles in recent games, Senator Enoh disclosed that discussions with the President, General Secretary, and the Technical Department of the Nigerian Football Federation (NFF) had taken place. However, any decision regarding Jose Peseiro’s position as the coach will only be considered after the conclusion of the upcoming AFCON tournament.
Enoh emphasized the need for caution in making decisions, especially with AFCON approaching rapidly. He stated, “AFCON is so close that we need to be careful in what decisions we make. But the next qualification rounds for the World Cup – the next match is in June – so it gives us something, you know, to take decisions going forward.”
Highlighting the emotional nature of football decisions, Enoh acknowledged the passions involved but stressed the importance of making decisions without being driven solely by emotions. He stated, “I have found out that in this sector; there are passions and emotions. Where you are seated and where I am providing leadership, you don’t respond. You know you are not driven by passions and emotions. No, you take your time.”
Responding to calls from football stakeholders for Peseiro’s dismissal due to poor results, Enoh emphasized that the decision to sack a coach should not be influenced by emotions. He clarified, “As a Minister, I am deeply concerned with the fortunes of the national team in recent times, but AFCON is around the corner, and the contract of Peseiro is tied to the fortunes of the Super Eagles at the football fiesta.”
