Canadian boxer Katia Bissonnette made a last-minute withdrawal from a scheduled fight against transgender fighter Mya Walmsley, citing ‘safety concerns’ upon learning she would be facing a biological male. The revelation came just an hour before the match, leading to a default win for Walmsley, as no replacement in the same weight class was found.

Expressing her viewpoint, Bissonnette stated, ‘Women shouldn’t have to bear the physical and psychological risks brought by a man’s decisions regarding his personal life and identity.’ She advocated for the establishment of separate categories for biological males and females in sports.

Bissonnette referenced a University of Utah study, indicating that men can punch 163 percent harder than women. While acknowledging that hormone blockers may slightly reduce this advantage in transgender women, she stressed the need for a balance in competition for equality and fairness in the realm of sports.

Boxing Canada’s policy suggests that a trans fighter’s identity should not be disclosed if the transition occurred before puberty to prevent discrimination. Walmsley, originally from Australia with an undisclosed history, criticized Bissonnette for publicly outing her instead of seeking a direct resolution.

In a statement, Walmsley expressed concerns that such accusations could jeopardize athletes in the women’s category, potentially leading to arbitrary and invasive regulations.
