The University of Port Harcourt (UNIPORT), has conferred an Honorary Doctor of Science (DSc Honoris Causa), degree on the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, in recognition of his distinguished public service and contributions to the university’s growth.
UNIPORT Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Owunari Georgewill, announced the conferment during a visit to Wike’s Abuja residence, noting that the award ceremony will hold on July 26 as part of the university’s 50th anniversary celebrations.
Prof. Georgewill described Wike, an alumnus of the institution, as a proud ambassador and major benefactor, whose contributions, such as establishing the Faculty of Law and building a modern convocation arena have left a lasting legacy.
Registrar Gloria Chinda, in a letter dated June 10, confirmed the Senate’s approval, citing Wike’s visionary leadership in Rivers State and at the national level.
UNIPORT Pro-Chancellor, Senator Mao Ohuabunwa, also praised Wike’s consistent support for the university, including a recent donation of a multimedia centre.
In response, Wike expressed gratitude, saying, “This honour means a lot to me and my family. I will continue to support my alma mater in every way I can.”
The honorary degree will be presented during UNIPORT’s 35th Convocation Ceremony.
