Corps Members’ Allowance To Rise With New minimum Wage implementation – NYSC

Published

on

The National Youth Service Corps has assured corps members that the N33,000 monthly stipends will be increased once the Federal Government implements the new minimum wage.

The NYSC Director General, Yusha’u Ahmed, stated this on Tuesday when he was in Kebbi and Sokoto to address the 2024 Batch ‘B’ stream two corps members at the orientation camps in both states.

He stated that corps members’ contributions to the country’s socio-economic development are invaluable, emphasising that members of the scheme should use their service year to develop themselves and plan for a brighter future.

He urged corps members to take advantage of the NYSC skill acquisition and entrepreneurship development program.

The DG said, ”At least, learn a skill while in camp and after the Orientation Course, you continue with the post-camp training. Try to acquire a skill that would enable you to create jobs and employ others instead of searching for jobs. We have many ex-Corps members across the country who are doing well in their different vocations today.

“The NYSC Management has partnered with many reliable organizations like the Central Bank of Nigeria, Bank of Industry, Unity Bank Access Bank, and NNPC Foundation among others, that have been assisting in giving loans and grants to Corps Members.”

He assured corps members of their safety throughout their service year.

He stated that campers would be posted to secure locations but advised them to stay vigilant in their surroundings.

Speaking, the NYSC coordinator in Kebbi, Aghata Banki-Okolo, noted that corps members have adapted well to camp life.

“They are responding positively to all camp activities and instructions. We also have a total number of 240 camp officials who have been applying emotional intelligence in the discharge of their duties.

“A total of 1,195 Corps Members have been registered, comprising 1,077 for Kebbi and 118 that were dislodged from Zamfara State,” she said.

On his part, the NYSC coordinator in Sokoto, Yakubu Usman, also praised corps members for their discipline and swift adaptation to the camp environment.

Usman mentioned that the total number of corps members in Sokoto is 1,488, including 682 males and 806 females, noting that this figure includes 134 males and 66 females who were displaced from Zamfara due to security threats.

In July, the organised labour sector agreed to a minimum wage of N70,000 after negotiations with the federal government.

The bill raising Nigeria’s minimum wage from N30,000 was passed by the National Assembly on July 23 and signed into law on July 29.

Atoyebi Adewumi Wins 4th National Essay Competition, Beats 2,000 Contestants

Atoyebi Adewumi has emerged winner of the fourth edition of the National Essay Competition, beating more than 2,000 contestants in an intellectual contest aimed at promoting academic excellence, critical thinking and creative writing among young Nigerians.

The competition, which focused on the relevance of taxation to national development, challenged participants to examine the role of tax revenue in financing public services, stimulating economic growth and strengthening the relationship between government and citizens.

The initiative provided a platform for young Nigerians to demonstrate their writing skills, articulate informed perspectives on national issues and contribute ideas towards building a more responsible and progressive society.

Speaking after being declared winner, an elated Adewumi expressed gratitude to the convener, Foluso Sylvanus Ojo, and the organising team for providing young Nigerians with an opportunity to showcase their intellectual abilities.

“I am so glad, very, very glad, to have this privilege of emerging as the winner. I am grateful to the convener and the entire team, as well as everyone who supported this vision,” Adewumi said.

In his remarks, Ojo expressed concern over the tendency to criticise the attitudes and lifestyles of younger generations without providing adequate opportunities to nurture their talents and channel their energies towards productive pursuits.

He called on the government, corporate organisations and nongovernmental organisations to invest more in educational initiatives that promote intellectual excellence, creativity and responsible citizenship.

According to him, sustained investment in academic competitions and youth development programmes would encourage discipline, innovation and a stronger commitment to national development.

Drawing a comparison with the substantial cash prizes awarded in some reality television competitions in Nigeria, Ojo argued that students and intellectually gifted young Nigerians deserved greater recognition, financial support and encouragement.

“I believe the government should support initiatives like this because individuals need supportive hands, especially from the government. When they receive such support, they become more confident and motivated to continue their good work,” he said.

Ojo maintained that society could not continue to complain about the attitudes and lifestyles of young people without deliberately investing in programmes that encourage positive values and productive engagement.

The fourth edition of the competition also underscored the importance of tax awareness among young Nigerians, highlighting how effective taxation, transparency and accountable governance could contribute to improved infrastructure, education, healthcare and other essential public services.

Beyond celebrating the winner, the competition reinforced the need to identify, encourage and empower emerging intellectual talents capable of contributing meaningfully to Nigeria’s development.
