Gombe Launches Direct Fertiliser Distribution to Boost 2025 Wet Season Farming

To boost agricultural productivity and food security, the Gombe State Government has commenced the direct distribution of heavily subsidized fertiliser to farmers across all 114 wards for the 2025 wet season.

The initiative, championed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, aims to eliminate middlemen and logistical bottlenecks by delivering fertiliser straight to farmers at the grassroots, down to the polling unit level.

Trucks loaded with fertiliser have already been dispatched to Local Government Areas following the Governor’s official flag-off of the 2025 wet season farming campaign.

The state is distributing 10,000 metric tons, equivalent to 200,000 bags of high-quality fertiliser at a significantly discounted rate.

Speaking on the progress of the exercise, Dr. Barnabas Malle, Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, confirmed on Sunday that the distribution was proceeding smoothly.

“LGAs have begun receiving their allocated shares, which are being delivered directly to farmers at ward level,” he said.

Dr. Malle praised the quality of the fertiliser, describing it as “one of the best produced in the country,” and noted that the timely distribution is expected to greatly enhance crop yields and overall agricultural output across the state.

He urged farmers to apply the inputs responsibly and to heed weather advisories to mitigate environmental risks.

He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and rural development.

The direct-to-farmer approach marks a significant shift in input delivery and places Gombe at the forefront of agricultural innovation in Nigeria, offering a more efficient and farmer-focused model for improving productivity and livelihoods.

Abuja Residents Praise FG as Food Prices Drop

Residents of Abuja have lauded the Federal Government’s intervention in the agricultural sector, saying the recent drop in food prices has eased pressure on households in the Federal Capital Territory and beyond.

Speaking with reporters on Tuesday, a foodstuff vendor at Wuse Market, Mrs. Bunmi Akinpelu, said government measures had helped curb the rising cost of staples.

She noted that prices of key commodities such as rice, beans and yam flour had fallen significantly.

“A bag of rice that sold for about ₦76,000 a few months ago now goes for around ₦55,000,” Akinpelu said, adding that the reduction had brought relief to both traders and consumers.

Similarly, a civil servant, Mrs. Nwodo Chukwu, attributed the price drop to policies that boosted food supply.

According to her, increased availability had created a surplus, leading to lower prices. “Food costs have been a major burden. With this reduction, families can now afford more,” she said.

However, some residents urged caution. Mrs. Cynthia Chukwuma, a shopper at Lugbe Market, welcomed the development but called on the government to ensure price stability.

“We have seen prices fall before only to rise again. Sustainability is key,” she said.

A mechanised farmer, Mr. Kayode Iyiola, said the decline in prices was due to a mix of government intervention and seasonal factors. He added that federal support for farmers had played a crucial role in stabilising the market.
