To boost agricultural productivity and food security, the Gombe State Government has commenced the direct distribution of heavily subsidized fertiliser to farmers across all 114 wards for the 2025 wet season.
The initiative, championed by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, aims to eliminate middlemen and logistical bottlenecks by delivering fertiliser straight to farmers at the grassroots, down to the polling unit level.
Trucks loaded with fertiliser have already been dispatched to Local Government Areas following the Governor’s official flag-off of the 2025 wet season farming campaign.
The state is distributing 10,000 metric tons, equivalent to 200,000 bags of high-quality fertiliser at a significantly discounted rate.
Speaking on the progress of the exercise, Dr. Barnabas Malle, Commissioner for Agriculture, Animal Husbandry and Cooperatives, confirmed on Sunday that the distribution was proceeding smoothly.
“LGAs have begun receiving their allocated shares, which are being delivered directly to farmers at ward level,” he said.
Dr. Malle praised the quality of the fertiliser, describing it as “one of the best produced in the country,” and noted that the timely distribution is expected to greatly enhance crop yields and overall agricultural output across the state.
He urged farmers to apply the inputs responsibly and to heed weather advisories to mitigate environmental risks.
He also reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to agriculture as a key driver of economic growth and rural development.
The direct-to-farmer approach marks a significant shift in input delivery and places Gombe at the forefront of agricultural innovation in Nigeria, offering a more efficient and farmer-focused model for improving productivity and livelihoods.
