The Lagos State Police Command has finally arrested Friday Onu, the man caught on video brutally assaulting a female commercial driver, Yetunde Amole, on the Lekki Epe Expressway.
Onu, who was attempting to steal Amole’s car battery, pounced on her when she bravely confronted him near the Oriental Hotel on Monday afternoon.
The disturbing footage of the attack quickly spread across social media, sparking widespread outrage and calls for swift justice.
Confirming the arrest in a statement on Wednesday, the command’s spokesperson, CSP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that officers from the Maroko Division apprehended the suspect shortly after the incident.
“The Lagos State Police Command is aware of the viral video showing the assault of Yetunde Amole by a suspected thug in the Oriental Hotel area,” Hundeyin stated. “The command condemns this reprehensible act in the strongest terms and wishes to update the public on the steps already taken.”
Hundeyin explained that Onu had been detained and preparations were in place for his arraignment before he suddenly fell ill in custody.
He was promptly transferred to Falomo Police Hospital, where he remains under close watch.
“The suspect will face the full weight of the law as soon as police medical personnel confirm he is fit for trial,” Hundeyin assured.
Reiterating the command’s dedication to public safety, Hundeyin called on Lagosians to remain vigilant and continue reporting criminal activities.
He emphasised that the police will not relent in their mission to protect lives and property across the state.
Amole, whose courage in resisting the attacker has been widely praised, is reported to be safe, as authorities continue to monitor the situation closely.
The Lagos State Police Command has pledged that justice will be served in this case, promising to keep the public informed as proceedings unfold.
