North Central APC Forum Suspends Agitation for Ganduje’s Removal, Await NEC Decision

Published

on

The North Central All Progressives Congress (APC) Forum has temporarily suspended its demand for the removal of Abdullahi Ganduje as the National Chairman of the APC ahead of the forthcoming National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting.

The forum had previously opposed Ganduje’s appointment, arguing that the position should be reserved for the North Central region in line with the party’s 2022 constitution, as amended. Since his appointment, the group has been relentless in its pursuit of Ganduje’s removal, staging protests, holding press conferences, engaging in consultations, and even taking the matter to the Federal High Court in Abuja to nullify his appointment.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, the Chairman of the North Central APC Forum, Alhaji Saleh Zazzaga, clarified that their agitation was never against Ganduje as an individual but rather a push to secure the rights, privileges, and democratic dividends for the North Central region.

“We are not against Ganduje personally, but we are pursuing the rights and political privileges for our region. This has always been about fair representation and equity,” Zazzaga said.

According to the forum, recent peace and reconciliation efforts have led them to reconsider their position. Zazzaga explained that their primary goal is the progress of the party, the leadership, and its National Executive Committee, and that stepping down their agitation at this moment aligns with their commitment to the party’s unity.

“It has been seven years since the formation of this great North Central APC Forum. Seven years of formidable struggle and agitation in defense of our geo-political zone. We have indeed led struggles for the political balance of our region, and the Almighty Allah is gracious to us as a people,” Zazzaga noted.

He further recalled how the forum immediately stood in opposition to Ganduje’s election following the resignation of the former National Chairman, Senator Abdullahi Adamu, in 2023. The forum argued that the chairmanship should have remained in the North Central zone, in accordance with the party’s constitution, which triggered their sustained protests and legal battle.

“We addressed press conferences, organized protests, and instituted a lawsuit against the national chairman, Dr. Abdullahi Umar Ganduje, at a Federal High Court in Abuja. It was a long judicial battle that we believed we would win, but unfortunately, the court ruled against us,” Zazzaga remarked, emphasizing that they had no personal issue with Ganduje but were defending their region’s interests.

Despite their disappointment, the forum recognized the authority of the NEC to make key decisions on party zoning and leadership elections. Zazzaga acknowledged the NEC’s role in electing Ganduje and pointed out that the upcoming NEC meeting could result in further decisions that would benefit the party as it prepares for the 2027 general elections.

“We at the North Central APC Forum have unanimously agreed to step down our agitation pending the decision of the National Executive Committee of our party,” Zazzaga declared, adding that this decision is in line with the forum’s principles of fairness, equity, and justice.

The chairman expressed hope that suspending their campaign for Ganduje’s removal would give the North Central zone a fair hearing at the upcoming NEC meeting. He believed that this move would also allow the region’s political leaders to negotiate with the party’s central leadership on specific benefits and opportunities for the zone.

“We believe that by standing down at this time, the North Central geo-political zone will have a fair hearing at the NEC, and our leaders will have free hands to negotiate with the centre for specific benefits that should be attracted to our zone,” he concluded.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has disowned a planned protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Abuja and other parts of the country.

In a statement issued Monday from its National Secretariat in Abuja, the party said reports linking it to the proposed protest were false, describing the planned demonstration as illegal.

The statement, signed by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the organisers of the protest were impostors and not members of the party.

The NNPP cited a Federal High Court judgment delivered on April 18, 2024, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2024, in which Justice Emeka Nwite upheld the expulsion of the individuals involved.

The party urged the public and security agencies to disregard any attempt to associate it with the protest, reaffirming its commitment to lawful and democratic engagement.
