Anti-Party Activities: PDP Moves to Sanction Wike, Disciplinary Action Looms

Published

on

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) is preparing to take disciplinary measures against the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, over allegations of anti-party activities, which have raised concerns within the party’s ranks. The PDP’s decision signals a firm stance against internal disloyalty as tensions continue to simmer among key political figures.

Umar Sani, Senior Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to former Vice President Namadi Sambo, provided insight into the party’s plans during an appearance on Arise TV’s Morning Show. Sani emphasized that Wike, despite his position and influence, is not immune to party discipline. The newly formed PDP disciplinary committee, chaired by elder statesman Chief Tom Ikimi, has been tasked with addressing these alleged violations.

Sani highlighted the importance of upholding party discipline, stating, “The issue has been oversimplified, with many framing it as a personal clash between former Vice President Abubakar Atiku and Nyesom Wike. However, the real driving force behind this is the PDP Governors’ Forum, which has reasserted itself after a period of dormancy. The Forum is now fully involved in resolving this crisis, and it is determined to restore order within the party.”

The PDP Governors’ Forum, historically a key player in resolving internal disputes, has now become actively engaged in addressing the issues surrounding Wike’s alleged anti-party activities. This renewed involvement signals the seriousness with which the party is treating the matter, especially as it aims to heal internal divisions in preparation for upcoming political battles.

The formation of the disciplinary committee comes after months of public disagreements between Wike and several top PDP members. Wike, a former governor of Rivers State, has been accused of undermining the party’s interests, particularly during the last presidential election cycle. His outspoken criticism of party leadership and alleged fraternization with opposition elements has only deepened the rift within the PDP.

Sani also addressed the legal aspect of Wike’s potential punishment, noting that while court orders may prevent the immediate removal of party officials, they do not preclude the PDP from suspending or disciplining members found guilty of anti-party activities. “Wike is not above the party,” Sani affirmed. “The disciplinary committee will handle the situation based on the petitions that have been received. If found guilty, appropriate action will be taken.”

The controversy surrounding Wike’s actions is not new. In September, the PDP Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Ibrahim Abdullahi, revealed during an appearance on Channels Television’s Sunrise Daily that Wike had been summoned by the party to answer for his alleged anti-party behavior. According to Abdullahi, Wike was issued a letter instructing him to appear before the Tom Ikimi-led disciplinary committee.

Abdullahi reiterated the party’s position, stating, “Three weeks ago, we established two important committees: one for reconciliation and the other for discipline. Nyesom Wike is among the individuals who have been called to appear before the disciplinary committee, which is led by Chief Tom Ikimi. The committee will address numerous complaints about anti-party activities, including allegations that some members acted in ways that undermined the party during the primary process.”

Petitions against Wike and other members accused of similar activities have been aggregated and sent to the committee for review. These petitions suggest that Wike’s conduct has caused significant discomfort within the party, especially in light of the outcome of the 2023 presidential election. Wike’s alleged role in undermining the PDP’s presidential campaign has led to calls from some party members for his expulsion.

“There are members within the party who believe Wike should have been expelled long ago for his actions, and they have been submitting petitions to the leadership,” Abdullahi added. The calls for Wike’s expulsion underscore the deep divisions that his actions have caused within the PDP.

Despite the controversy, Wike has maintained a defiant stance, insisting that his actions were in the best interest of the party and the country. He has repeatedly criticized the PDP’s leadership, particularly regarding the outcome of the 2023 presidential primary, in which he lost the nomination to Atiku Abubakar. Wike’s vocal opposition to the party’s decisions has fueled speculation that his allegiance to the PDP has waned.

The New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has disowned a planned protest against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduled for Tuesday, January 20, 2026, in Abuja and other parts of the country.

In a statement issued Monday from its National Secretariat in Abuja, the party said reports linking it to the proposed protest were false, describing the planned demonstration as illegal.

The statement, signed by the NNPP National Publicity Secretary, Ladipo Johnson, said the organisers of the protest were impostors and not members of the party.

The NNPP cited a Federal High Court judgment delivered on April 18, 2024, in Suit No. FHC/ABJ/CS/1354/2024, in which Justice Emeka Nwite upheld the expulsion of the individuals involved.

The party urged the public and security agencies to disregard any attempt to associate it with the protest, reaffirming its commitment to lawful and democratic engagement.
