The stark disparity in girls’ education in Nigeria has prompted First Lady Oluremi Tinubu to advocate for the education of female children. Speaking in Osogbo, the capital of Osun State, during the opening of the Alternative High Schools for Girls, she expressed her commitment to providing exceptional young girls and women with opportunities for a promising future.
Tinubu recounted her efforts dating back to 2007 when she proposed the concept of establishing an alternative high school for girls during her husband’s tenure as Lagos State governor. This initiative, which aimed to address obstacles such as unplanned pregnancies, cultural barriers, and economic constraints hindering girls’ education, is still operational today with support from the Lagos State Ministry of Education.
Highlighting the importance of education in empowering girls and enabling them to make informed decisions about their futures, Tinubu emphasized the need for alternative educational pathways to accommodate those who face challenges in traditional schooling. The establishment of the Alternative High Schools for Girls in Osun State, selected through an impartial raffle process, reflects this commitment.
Governor Ademola Adeleke assured Tinubu of his administration’s support in ensuring the success of the school. He reaffirmed his government’s dedication to advancing girls’ education and highlighted initiatives aimed at addressing issues such as sexual assault against women and economic empowerment.
Dr. Ahmed Bobboi, the Executive Secretary of Universal Basic Education, praised the efforts of the Adeleke administration in expanding and improving basic education in Osun State. He expressed confidence in the new school’s ability to achieve its goals and exceed expectations based on the government’s track record.
