Prof. Wahab Egbewole, Vice Chancellor of the University of Ilorin (Unilorin), shared that the institution grapples with an annual electricity bill of approximately N1.3 billion despite financial challenges. He revealed this during an interactive session with Unilorin Students’ Union Executive Committee members in his office on Monday.
Egbewole disclosed that the university spends between N120 million to N130 million monthly on electricity alone, amounting to an annual expense ranging from N1.2 to N1.3 billion. Despite this financial strain, he highlighted the university’s commitment to providing essential services, including water, internet, laboratory and classroom equipment, health facilities, among others.
The vice chancellor expressed confidence in the student union’s leadership and stressed the importance of understanding the university’s vision for effective communication and collaboration. He urged responsible student unionism and encouraged leaders to build a robust network among their peers. Egbewole reiterated his administration’s commitment to creating a conducive environment for student success.
Additionally, he underscored the sanctity of the academic calendar, emphasizing its importance for both students and management. “Our calendar is sacred, and the more we adhere to it, the better it is for both students and management,” he emphasized.
