Africa’s richest man, Aliko Dangote, has announced his intentions to publicly list the Dangote Petroleum Refinery, a $20 billion project, on the Nigerian Exchange Limited. In an interview with the Financial Times, Dangote expressed confidence in overcoming challenges related to crude oil supply, marking a significant milestone for the company’s resolved listing challenges.
Dangote emphasized the readiness to move forward with the listing, starting with a production capacity of 350,000 barrels a day. Despite facing formidable challenges, he stated, “It is either we sink, or we sail through. And we thank Almighty that at least we have arrived at the destination.”
Nigeria, being Africa’s largest oil producer, currently imports refined petrol despite having dysfunctional refineries. Dangote’s refinery, with its $20 billion investment, is poised to address this gap in the market, producing diesel, kerosene, and jet fuel. Operations are expected to commence in December, with a deal already finalized for the delivery of the first cargo of about 6 million barrels.
Once at full capacity, the refinery aims to produce 650,000 barrels per day, initially rolling out with 540,000 barrels per day. The projected output includes 27 million liters of diesel, 11 million liters of kerosene, and 9 million liters of jet fuel. Crude for the refinery will be sourced from various producers in Nigeria, including the country’s state oil company.
While doubts arose due to persistent delays and cost overruns, Dangote assured that the project is now on track, positioning it as a potential game-changer in Nigeria’s oil industry. The public listing could further impact the company’s valuation and investor engagement positively.
