Nigeria Disagrees with EU's Findings on 2023 Polls
The Nigerian presidency has rejected the conclusions of the European Union on the 2023 general elections.
In a press release, the presidency stated that the EU is seeking to discredit the electoral process and the sovereignty of the country, insisting on its own yardstick and assessment of the credibility and transparency of the elections.
The statement posits that the 2023 general elections, especially the presidential election won by President Bola Tinubu/All Progressives Congress, were credible, peaceful, free, fair and the best organised since 1999.
It called into question the evidence behind the EU report given the very limited coverage of the election by the EU's observers and asked how the EU reached its conclusions with barely one observer per state.
The presidency added that the EU's conclusions relied heavily on hearsay, social media commentaries and opposition talking heads, and sustained the same premature denunciatory stance contained in its preliminary report.
The presidency also mentioned that the African Union, ECOWAS, Commonwealth Observer Mission and the Nigerian Bar Association gave a more accurate and holistic assessment of the elections.
The Nigerian Bar Association reported that 91.8% of Nigerians rated the election as credible and satisfactory.
The presidency urged the EU and other foreign interests to be objective in their assessments of the internal affairs of Nigeria and allow the country to breathe.
