The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has declared Kasim Mohammed of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) winner of the Gwagwalada Area Council chairmanship election in the Federal Capital Territory.

Mohammed polled 22,165 votes to defeat Yahaya Shehu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), who scored 17,788 votes.

Announcing the result, the Returning Officer, Philip Akpen, said Mohammed met the legal requirements and described the exercise as peaceful.

The election, however, witnessed allegations of voter intimidation and vote-buying in some areas. Following the declaration, PDP supporters celebrated across Gwagwalada town as INEC assured that due process was followed.
