A pedestrian, Jonah Gilla Angbaku, was killed on Thursday after he was knocked down by a vehicle while attempting to cross a busy junction in Abuja city centre.
A witness, Ali Muhammad, said the deceased had alighted from a commercial vehicle under the Wuye junction bridge and was crossing toward the NAFDAC junction when a speeding Mercedes-Benz SUV hit him and dragged his body several metres.
Muhammad said the driver appeared to slow down but suddenly sped off.
A police officer at the scene said the location had recorded several similar incidents since last year.
Items recovered from the deceased included a mobile phone, smartwatch, driver’s licence, ATM cards, wallet and an identity card from G4S security firm.
The case is to be handed over to the Wuye Police Division for investigation.
