The Department of State Services (DSS), has taken over the investigation into the December 28, 2025, attack on media mogul Don Pedro Obaseki, who was allegedly abducted after making controversial remarks about the Benin Monarchy while in Europe.
Obaseki was reportedly confronted by a group while playing football with friends, forcibly taken to the palace, and later handed over to the police before he was released.
The development was confirmed in a statement by Obaseki’s lawyer, Mr. Femi Falana (SAN), who said civil proceedings have also been initiated in Nigerian courts.
Falana added that petitions have been submitted to regional and international bodies, including the ECOWAS Court of Justice, European Union human-rights mechanisms and the United Nations Special Rapporteur on torture and arbitrary detention.
Falana said Obaseki has already appeared before the DSS in Benin City under the supervision of the State Director, with all interactions formally documented.
He described the incident as an act of terrorism, alleging conspiracy, unlawful detention, assault, and obstruction of justice.
Falana commended the DSS for handling the matter with seriousness, adding that Obaseki remains fully cooperative as investigations continue.
