The Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Abuja, has denied allegations of negligence in the death of Abuja-based singer Ifunanya Nwagene, who died on Saturday following complications from a snake bite.
In a statement on Sunday, the hospital said its medical team acted promptly and administered appropriate treatment, including polyvalent snake antivenom, resuscitation, intravenous fluids and oxygen support, but efforts to save her life were unsuccessful.
FMC explained that Nwagene developed severe neurotoxic complications and was being stabilised for transfer to the Intensive Care Unit when her condition suddenly deteriorated. Cardiopulmonary resuscitation and other life-saving measures were immediately carried out, without success.
The hospital dismissed social media claims that antivenom was unavailable or that its response was inadequate, describing the allegations as unfounded and not reflective of events.
Nwagene, popularly known as Nanyah, was a soprano with the Amemuso Choir.
Her death was confirmed by the choir in a Facebook statement signed by its Music Director, Sam Ezugwu, who described her passing as a major loss to Abuja’s music scene.
Burial arrangements, the choir said, will be announced later.
