An Islamic organisation, the Young Muslim League of Nigeria, has expressed support for the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Professor Joash Amupitan, rejecting calls by the Supreme Council for Shariah in Nigeria (SCSN) for his removal.

The group described the Sharia Council’s demand as unnecessary and capable of undermining national unity and democratic institutions, stressing that concerns over electoral leadership should be addressed through constitutional and legal channels rather than religious pressure.

The Sharia Council had accused Prof. Amupitan of lacking integrity based on some of his past legal opinions and warned that Muslims would not recognise elections conducted under his leadership, a stance that has sparked widespread reactions.

In response, the Young Muslim League said the council’s position was divisive, noting that Islam upholds justice, fairness, and respect for due process. It added that there is no legal basis for questioning the INEC chairman’s appointment.

The group urged religious leaders to promote peace and national cohesion, particularly as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections.
