A political scientist, Prof. Jideofor Adibe of Nasarawa State University, has said there is currently no credible political alternative to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking in an interview, Adibe noted that despite opposition coalitions and recent defections from the APC, no party has shown the organisational strength, national spread or voter confidence required to mount a serious challenge.
He said the APC’s control of several states and strong presence in the National Assembly has sustained its dominance.
He observed that opposition parties remain fragmented, with the African Democratic Congress, Peoples Democratic Party, Labour Party and New Nigeria Peoples Party struggling with internal divisions and weak grassroots structures.
While acknowledging that defections have strengthened the APC’s position, Adibe cautioned that elite alliances alone may not guarantee electoral victory, especially if public support declines amid economic challenges.
