The Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), in Abuja has directed all primary and secondary school teachers in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), to join the ongoing strike by the Joint Union Action Committee (JUAC), from Monday.

The directive was contained in a communiqué jointly signed by the NUT Chairman, Abdullahi Shafas; Secretary, Margaret Jethro; and Publicity Secretary, Ibukun Adekeye, following a directive from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), for affiliate unions in the FCT to escalate the industrial action.

According to the communiqué, teachers are to stay away from classrooms and converge at the National Industrial Court, Gimbiya Street, Area 11, Abuja, by 7:00 a.m. on Monday to show solidarity during a court hearing involving JUAC.

While noting earlier reservations about the strike’s organisation, the union said NLC’s intervention necessitated a united front.
The action follows an indefinite strike by FCTA workers since January 19 over unresolved welfare and entitlement issues.
