At least seven people were feared killed on Tuesday when suspected terrorists attacked Wawa community in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State, plunging the agrarian settlement into mourning.

Among the victims was a staff member of the Kainji Lake National Park, whose body had yet to be recovered as of the time of filing this report. Corpses recovered were deposited at the Basic Health Centre (BHC), in Wawa.

Residents said the attack followed reports that a prominent youth was assaulted on his farm by suspected bandits. In response, some youths mobilised to confront the attackers and rescue the victim. While a number returned safely, others went missing, raising alarm in the community.

Security operatives later recovered six unidentified bodies from nearby bushes, confirming the fatalities. The incident has heightened fear in the Borgu Emirate, with residents describing the killings as devastating and traumatic.

Community leaders urged calm and cautioned against spreading rumours, while calling on security agencies to intensify efforts to restore peace and protect lives in the area.
