Former Vice President and Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, has faulted the Electoral Act 2022, describing its loopholes as a threat to the credibility of the 2027 general elections.

In a post on his verified X (formerly Twitter) handle on Thursday, Atiku said the flaws in the Act contributed to irregularities during the 2023 general elections, making it difficult for petitioners to successfully prosecute electoral cases.

He called for the urgent amendment of the law to restore public confidence in Nigeria’s electoral process, warning that failure to act could undermine future elections.

Atiku also criticised what he described as the Senate’s slow pace in handling the proposed amendments, cautioning that prolonged delays could erode public trust in democracy.

Referencing a report by the Foundation for Investigative Journalism (FIJ), he said the urgency with which the National Assembly treats the amendment bill would determine the credibility of the 2027 polls.

“It is imperative that the Senate finalises the amendments and ensures the updated law governs the conduct of the 2027 elections. Anything short of this is a deliberate attempt to rig the election long before the ballots are cast,” Atiku said.
