A mild drama unfolded on Monday at the 2026 Inter-Faith Gathering held at the Secretariat’s Grand Space in Ibadan when the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, appeared to snub the Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Akeem Owoade.
Witnesses said the Alaafin extended his hand in greeting to the Olubadan at the event, but the gesture was not returned. The Olubadan later greeted Governor Seyi Makinde and other dignitaries before taking his seat.
The incident, observed by several attendees, has since sparked public debate, with differing views on traditional protocol, hierarchy and expected conduct among royal institutions. While some described the moment as unfortunate, others cautioned against drawing conclusions without understanding established customs.
The inter-faith gathering brought together traditional rulers, religious leaders and government officials to promote unity and peaceful coexistence in Oyo State.
Speaking at the event, Governor Makinde urged residents to remain security-conscious, stressing that peace and safety require collective responsibility.
